Sherry Knowles spoke at the 2012 Global IP & Innovation Summit hosted by Managing Intellectual Property Magazine in Shanghai, China on September 4-5, 2012 as a panelist on “Industry Focus: Pharmaceuticals and Life Sciences in Asia, Europe and the US.” The other panelists were Ningling Wang (Moderator), Partner, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP; Tom Irving, Partner, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP; Caihui Li, Chief IP Officer, National Research Center on Antibody; and Len Smith, Principal Intellectual Property Counsel, Medicis. The panel focused on recent cases and their implications: stem cell research and the Prometheus ruling; collaboration, competition and the future of IP in the age of bespoke drugs; and pharmaceuticals and seizing local potential: partnering and co-promotion for success and avoiding the pitfalls around management and pricing.

The event provided comprehensive coverage of IP issues from multiple perspectives. It gave relevant knowledge and strategic advice to Chinese and Asian firms who are rapidly expanding in the West and, in a parallel stream, gave vital updates to all foreign entities keen to understand the different legal systems in the Asia-Pacific region so as to protect and advance their interests.
